About Swan Cottage

History Of The House
Swan Cottage dates back to the 17th Century, when it belonged to the Lord of the Manor of Bewdley. The first entry referring to the cottages of Severn Side North appear in the Manor Court Rolls dated 1664.

It is interesting to note that the property was owned by the same family from 1672 to 1776 and the head of the family was a baker. He bequeathed the property to a lady Spinster, which was contested leading to her surrender of the property in 1783.

In the 1800s the property was lived in by several families whose livelihoods ranged from rope makers and shop-keepers to carpenters. As well as being home to a deserted woman who relied upon the charitable efforts of the Blackcords charity.

During the 1900s the property sales information can be found through Deeds Of Title records and the rising cost of properties throughout this period can clearly be seen:

In 1910 the property was sold for £210
In 1949 the price had jumped to £325
The price dropped in 1962 to £250
But in 1983 the property cost soared to £16,500

Present-Day...
Bewdley is situated on the flood plain of the River Severn, and Swan Cottage is on the riverfront. The cottage has seen considerable flooding in the past, and has appeared on the Television news frequently as a result.

However, since the completion of the Bewdley Flood Defence Barriers in 2006 none of the cottages along the river have flooded; and hopefully these defences will keep the town safe from flooding in the future.
