About Bewdley

Local Information
Bewdley - Once described as "the most perfect Georgian town in Worcestershire", nestling on the banks of the River Severn, has a fascinating past - evidence of which can be found around the town.

Bewdley has always been an important crossing point of the river and the first bridge was constructed in 1447. Thomas Telford built the beautiful stone arched bridge which now spans the river and during the 17th and 18th centuries Bewdley became a thriving inland port with wool, coal and charcoal being just some of the commodities which were traded through it.

Important industries and trades also developed during this period with boat building, rope making, tanning, brass foundries and later pewtering occuring in the area.

Bewdley's importance as an inland port declined throughout the 18th Century when James Brindley built the Staffordshire and Worcestershier canal, linking Stourport and the River Severn with the industrial heartland of the midlands - leaving Bewdley to become the beautiful place it is now.
